The bulk of the emergency medicine residency training takes place at the LAC+USC Medical Center, also known as General Hospital. Founded in 1878, Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center (LAC+USC) is the nation's largest academic institution. It is one of the largest acute care hospitals in America and has been the primary facility of the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine since 1885. Originally established as a 100-bed hospital with 47 patients, it now is licensed for 1,395 beds and budgeted to staff 745 beds. LAC+USC services 50,000 inpatients and 750,000 outpatients annually. Among its specialized facilities and services is a Level I trauma service.

LAC+USC provides a full spectrum of emergency, inpatient and outpatient services. These include medical, surgical and emergency/trauma services in General Hospital.

LAC+USC is the largest single provider of health care in L.A. County, and treats more than 28 percent of trauma victims in the region. In addition, LAC+USC operates one of only three burn centers in the County and one of the few Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units in Southern California.

Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center

Formerly known as Queen of Angels/Hollywood Presbyterian, HPMC is a 434-bed acute care facility in the Hollywood/Los Feliz area of Los Angeles. PGY-2 residents spend 3 weeks on the Obstetrics service where they perform vaginal deliveries under the supervision of OB attendings.

Huntington Memorial Hospital

Located in Pasadena, Huntington Memorial Hospital is a 525-bed non-profit, community hospital affiliated with the University of Southern California School of Medicine. The hospital features a Level III Neonatal ICU (NICU) and a nine bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (the only facility of its kind in the San Gabriel Valley). The emergency department at HMH is a Level II Trauma Center (also the only trauma center in the San Gabriel Valley), and sees well over 60,000 patients annually.

Some residents will spend one month in the HMH Emergency Department as PGY-2 residents. All residents rotate through the HMH ED as PGY-3 residents. In addition, PGY-4 residents do a 4-week rotation in the PICU.

Long Beach Memorial Medical Center (LBMMC) operates a Level Two Trauma Center, emergency chest pain center and pediatric emergency department. The ED has 56 beds and sees an annual volume of 47,000 patients, 40% of whom are children. Some residents will spend one month in the LBMMC Emergency Department as PGY-2 residents. In addition, PGY-4 residents may spend elective time in the pediatric ED at LBMMC.

 

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

Founded in 1902, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is known as one of the best hospitals in the country. The hospital is a Pediatric Critical Care Center and a Level One Trauma Center. The Emergency Department features 32 beds and 4 trauma suites, and provides care to approximately 77,000 patients annually. Some residents will spend one month in the CSMC Emergency Department as PGY-2 residents.

 

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center

Harbor-UCLA is located in Torrance, CA, and has a pediatric emergency department which sees 22,000 patients annually. HUMC is designated as a Pediatric Critical Care Center and Pediatric Trauma Center. PGY-3 residents spend an aggregate of one month in the Pediatric ED at Harbor.
