Note:
All lecture material is kept locked in room 1330. Lectures are given by the 1060 attending from 7:30a-8:00a in the DEM library. The room is reserved until 8:30a for optional group discussion after the lecture. Please make a sign-in sheet and turn it into Gay's mailbox in room 1011.
Overall Goal :
The curriculum should develop the student's bedside skills, in particular, the approach and process of diagnosis and management in the undifferentiated patient with potentially emergent conditions. Therefore, a detailed examination of specific diseases is beyond the scope of each lecture topic.

- Major Trauma Basics: ATLS primary and secondary surveys, Head injuries, NEXUS, Thoracolumbar trauma
- Resuscitation: BLS, ACLS/Arrythymia Basics, Hypotension, Shock differentiation and management
- Altered Mental Status: AEIOU TIPS, ED Management
- Acute Chest Pain: ACS, PE, PTX, Dissection, Pericarditis, Esophageal Rupture
- Shortness of Breath: Airway obstruction (FB, Trauma, Neck Masses, Infectious,Anaphylaxis), Acute Respiratory Distress, Asthma/COPD, CHF, PNA/ARDS, PTX, Tamponade, Panic attack
- Toxicology Basics: Initial approach (ABCD/IV/O2/Monitor, Narcan/D50, Decontamination, Elimination), Toxidromes, Specific ingestions and antidotes (ASA, APAP, Toxic Alcohols)
- Hypertensive Emergencies: Emergency vs. Urgency, Encephalopathy, ACS/CHF, ARF, Sympathomimetics, Eclampsia
- Alcohol Related Emergencies: DTs, AKA, Alcoholic Hepatitis, Pancreatitis, Trauma, Cirrhosis complications
- Environmental Emergencies: Burns (thermal/electrical), Heat/Cold emergencies, Submersion injuries, Animal bites
- Dizziness: Syncope differential and evaluations (Cardiogenic, Neurogenic, Vasovagal, Situational, Orthostasis, etc); Central vs. Peripheral Vertigo
- Seizures: Status Epilepticus, New Onset versus Breakthrough Seizures
- Acute Headache: Life threatening Headaches (SAH and other CNS bleeding, Meningitis, CNS mass lesions, Acute Angle Closure Glaucoma, Temporal Arteritis, CO toxicity), Primary Headaches (Migraine, Cluster, Tension)
- Acute Visual Complaints: Red Eye/Eye Pain/Visual Loss (Corneal diseases/injury, Conjunctivitis, Iritis, Acute angle closure glaucoma, Retinal artery/vein occlusion, Retinal detachment, Eye trauma)
- Acute Back Pain and Fractures: Acute Back Pain (AAA, Cauda Equina, Epidural Abscess/Osteo, Epidural Hematoma, Vertebral Fractures); Fracture Complications (Compartment syndrome, Neurovascular compromise, Open fractures)
- Vaginal Bleeding and Pregnancy Complications: Ectopic pregnancy, Abortion (threatened/complete/incomplete/inevitable), Placenta Abruptio and Previa, Trauma and Pregnancy
- Family Violence/Pain Management: Domestic violence, Child Abuse, Elder Abuse, Sexual Assault
