Why might you want an faculty adviser in EM?

Once you've put EM on your short list of suitable specialties, it's time to think about getting an adviser. No matter what year in school you are, an adviser can help you decide whether EM is for you, choose a 3rd-year clerkship track and, most importantly, schedule 4th-year sub-internships, electives, selectives, ERAS, interviews, letters of recommendation, etc. Your adviser will be invaluable during that terrifically critical year of your life.

How do you get a faculty adviser in EM?

E-mail Dr. Jorge Fernandez, the EM clerkship director at LAC+USC at surfdoc2001@hotmail.com. You'll set up a brief meeting, and he'll hook you up with the faculty member who best suits your personality and goals.

If you wait until the end of 2nd-year and ask Student Affairs to get you an adviser in EM, they'll just send a list of students to Dr. Fernandez, so forgo that step and shoot Dr. Fernandez an e-mail as soon as you're ready.
