Medical Student Education
Thank you for considering a senior emergency medicine elective at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California (LAC-USC) Medical Center. We offer a clinically rich environment that is fast paced and hands-on! This elective, and several of our department's teaching faculty, have consistently won annual awards at the USC Keck School of Medicine.
Our clerkship is a four-week elective that is structured to allow you an intense clinical experience at one of the busiest EDs and trauma centers in the United States. You will rotate through our adult as well as our pediatric areas, supervised by our outstanding EM residents and faculty. You should expect to work at least 14 twelve hour shifts, of which half may be overnight shifts, and to function as a sub-intern. For guidance throughout this process, you will be paired with an EM resident each week and will work that resident's shift schedule.
In addition to an outstanding clinical experience, you will benefit from a variety of supplemental educational activities. Our faculty and residents facilitate four hours of medical student, small group, case-based sessions every Tuesday. DEM residency grand rounds are held every Thursday morning and frequently feature nationally recognized speakers. Furthermore, you will be taught a hands-on suturing workshop and will be offered an optional paramedic ride-along. Students who are considering emergency medicine as a specialty will be paired with a faculty advisor and are expected to present a case and journal article to their advisor.
