As of July 2009, the USC+LAC Emergency Medicine residency program has changed to a PGY1-4 format. With this change came an exciting opportunity to tailor the internship year to the specific educational goals in Emergency Medicine and provide a more integrated educational scheme to the 4 years of training. The PGY-1 year is divided roughly into halves, with one in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the other in various services. The goal of the internship year is to provide a solid foundation in both medical and surgical critically ill patients. To this end, roughly one fourth of the year is spent in the Surgical, Medical and Cardiac Intensive care units. Additionally, interns rotate through the ED orthopedics evaluation participating in urgent and emergent ED orthopedics consultations. In the anesthesiology rotation, interns become familiarized with airway management under more controlled and expected conditions than those in the ED. Interns spend 2 weeks in the Psychiatric Emergency Department participating in emergent psychiatric consultations. Lastly, during the EMS rotation, interns become familiarized with the LA County prehospital system, train in taking basestation calls and have the opportunity to participate in EMS and Air squad shifts.
