Stuart Swadron

Vice-Chair of Education and Program Director

Stuart Swadron has been involved with the residency program ever since joining the faculty at USC.After graduating from the University of Toronto, Faculty of Medicine in 1992, he completed his rotating internship at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, British Columbia and spent several years in general practice in his native Canada. From 1997-2000, he was a resident in Emergency Medicine at LA County/USC, serving as Chief Resident from 1999-2000.The following year, he completed an educational fellowship and joined the residency office as Assistant Program Director. He was appointed Program Director in 2004 and holds an appointment as Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine.He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Canada and the American College of Emergency Physicians.He also serves as president of the California Chapter of American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Swadron’s primary focus is resident education.He is a strong proponent of an emergency medicine curriculum that borrows from traditional models but is unique and considers the realities of a busy emergency department practice environment. His academic interests include cardiac and neurological emergencies and he is a frequent invited speaker both nationally and abroad.Dr. Swadron has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, and he is a regular guest and host on the audio CME journal EM:RAP (Emergency Medicine: Reviews and Perspectives).

Jan Shoenberger

Associate Program Director

After graduating from the USC Keck School of Medicine in 1999, Jan Shoenberger completed her internship in internal medicine at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California.She began her residency training the following year at LAC+USC.After serving as Chief Resident in 2002-3, she joined the residency office as Assistant Program Director.Dr. Shoenberger was appointed Associate Program Director in 2005 and holds an appointment as Assistant Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine. She is a fellow of both the American College of Emergency Physicians as well as the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Shoenberger has gained recognition as a speaker on the national level at the ACEP sponsored Emergency Medical Abstracts Critical Appraisal and other courses.Her academic interests are varied and include both emergency resuscitation and the interface between pain management, palliative care and emergency medicine.She has authored numerous peer reviewed papers and book chapters in emergency medicine.

Tom Mailhot

Assistant Program Director

Tom Mailhot graduated from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 2002.After completing his internship in internal medicine at OliveView-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar, California, he joined the residency in emergency medicine at LAC+USC, where he graduated in 2006.He joined the residency office at LAC+USC as Assistant Program Director, and he holds an appointment as Clinical Instructor of Emergency Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine.He is a fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Although having only recently joined the faculty at USC, Dr. Mailhot has already emerged as a leader in the field of emergency medicine bedside ultrasound.He is holds a certificate of registration in diagnostic sonography and teaches courses in bedside ultrasound at the ACEP Scientific Assembly and other national meetings. In 2008, he was awarded the Faculty of the Year award by the graduating residency class.

Brendan Kelleher

Assistant Program Director

We are proud to have Dr. Kelleher join us this year as the newest member of the residency team. Brendan graduated from the Keck School of Medicine in 2004 and completed his residency training with us at LAC+USC. In the 2007-8 academic year he served with distinction as Chief Resident, and took charge of the conference curriculum during the second half of the year. In November 2008, he will be a featured speaker at the department's Essentials of Emergency Medicine conference in Las Vegas. His portfolio this year includes the core curriculum in emergency orthopedics as well as the administration of our new online modular curriculum system.

Ron Welch

Program Manager

Ron Welch holds degrees in economics and accounting from the California State University at Long Beach.Ron brings years of experience from the private sector to the residency office, where he served as the administrator of a long term care facility and tax preparation consultant.

Ron joined the team at LAC+USC in 2006 and he has quickly become an invaluable member of the department.Ron serves as a liaison between the residents, faculty and the County administration. He alsoguides the residency office through a myriad of complex but vital regulatory processes.As the department makes the transition into our new facility, Ron plans to capitalize upon his extensive background in finance and strategic planning to help the residency meet the challenges of the future.

Susan Arnwine

Residency Secretary

Susan Arnwine has been serving the emergency medicine residents for almost two decades.For hundreds of applicants every year, she is the voice and the face of the department, as she coordinates the application and interview process every year.

Susan continues to serve the residents long after they graduate, providing credentialing and documentation services to our huge family of alumni.
